I watched too many political vids on youtube tonight.
The idiocy, ignorance, paranoia, doomsaying, etc. was just too much for my tender sensibilities.
Although I cannot claim to rising above feeling anxious and threatened by the many ominous challenges of the future (Chinese world dominance, terrorists with nukes, collapse of the dollar and following right behind it like a booby prize in a box of Fruit Loops, the dreaded Amero) I’m trying to realize on a conscious level that all these macro problems can go fuck themselves. Like Jefferson wrote, most of these things never happen, and when they do, the terrifying tiger behind the door often turns out to be a kitten.
So then there’s hope:

Although I can’t prove it, in the frequent absence of hope the human will still abide, because no other creature is interested by half in seeing what happens next.

Thomas Jefferson. I just read a book by Alan Dershowitz (I’m sure he proudly resides on The Right Wing Enemies List) called BLASHEMY! The book was essentially an argument against the religious right who think this country was founded as a CHRISTIAN nation. Jefferson himself was a huge critic of organized religion. He was even accused of being an atheist by John Adams in the Presidential Campaign of 1800. America at that time elected the so called atheist. Jefferson thought of himself as a deitiest – essentially someone who believed in a God of Nature, which is what he was referring to in the Declartion of Independence. It seems the reigious right these days are eating some much deserved shit – thank God, it’s about time!

The primary difference between Jefferson (the Democrat!) and the modern left is that Jefferson believed in God, while the left today is anti-religion, organized AND personal.
I hate Mrs. Bluenose and Pedophile Priest as much as anybody, I want pot and pussy on the free market, but getting rid of all religion, as the “hard” left wants to do, is impossible, if not suicidal for society. “As long as there is poverty there will be gods.”
I think you give the Religious Right too much credit for whatever problems they appear to be causing. I’m willing to bet that by the numbers the RR is more a media creation than anything
